Funeral For Fish (2024)

Inspired by ancient Chinese bronze vessels, I crafted these ceremonial ceramics to memorialize the fish I killed (metaphorically) in a previous work.

2000-3000 years ago, the ancient Chinese crafted majestic bronze vessels to worship the sky and the ancestors. It was a symbol of the highest level of respect. In my work, I see the dedication of my time, energy, and the finest craftsmanship as an expression of my own sincerity. Like the ancient Chinese, I am showing the highest level of respect for the fish.

We consider ourselves superior forms of life, yet we forget our evolutionary origins and the life being sacrificed to sustain our own lives. I want to pay respects to my food just as I would my ancestors, not only to acknowledge the sacrifice, but because in a sense, my food was my ancestor too.

Worship, sacrifice, life, death — they are all part of each other.

Even if it’s only metaphorical, I still want to say sorry for killing the fish, and thank it for feeding me artistically.
